In the Year 2000 – Silverlens Galleries

A month (or maybe 2 weeks) after the high of our family show, Gathered Narratives, I got a call from Isa Lorenzo, one of the owners of Silverlens Galleries. (where GN was held)

She asked me that if I can partner if Ian Jaucian for their post local show next year. I said yes without knowing two major things about that sentence.

1.) who was Ian Jaucian?

2.) What is Post Local?

Anyway, I was too excited (and kind of afraid) to ask and just said yes. Silverlens Galleries was kind of a big deal here and it’s pretty adult of me not to be riding on the coattails of any of my family members.

Before anything else, I needed to know: 1. WHO IS IAN JAUCIAN? Not saying that he isn’t famous or known or whatever. I just didn’t know him. I just started to pay attention 2 years ago to the people I was being introduced to so it’s probably (most probably) my fault I didn’t know him. We eventually met up to discuss the theme of our two-man show (MY FIRST).

Things to know about him: 1.) UP fine arts graduate. 2.) Specializes in robotics {!!!!} 3.) Worked in Ateneo Art Gallery and volunteers in projects in UP 4.) had shows in galleries I haven’t been too — hence the not knowing who he is.

WHAT IS POST LOCAL? Well, based from research (again, too scared to ask and be labeled as a mangmang) it is a show SG has every year where they pair up two artists who they think will gel well together.

FASTFORWARD to the following year, here is our show’s invite:

Our general theme was the future. What we think the future will be, what the future will look like.

Good thing we had a similar forecast : our {people} ultimate doom — of our own doing of course.

To better explain, here’s an excerpt from my sister’s write up of the show:

Okay, too many words, lets add pictures already!

Three artists open at the same night at Silverlens. Christina Dy was one of our co-opener — is that the right term? haha

So, that’s IAN. He made a robot that follows a light and can self water. This fascinates me so much.

Due to certain limits (budget and availability of parts in our island) he only was able to make one robot.
