This is the first time I’ll be posting a show from West Gallery woohoo! #LoveYourOwn
Currently (this statement will not be true after 30 May 2015) WG is showing works by Jonathan Ching, Jeona Zoleta, Hamilton Sulit and Erick Sausa
Gallery 1 held Jonathan Ching’s Flotsam & Jetsam.
We were in awe at these giant beauties.
Thought process as follows:
First, colors combinations were so good. It’s like how did you know this color went with this one. It’s colors that obviously matched but you’d never think of matching them — if that makes any sense.
Second, the subject and style is very near and dear to this Van Gogh lover.
Third, dang this light. I can’t get a decent picture.
LUCKILY, my brother took awesome ones for the website (westgallery.org)
Gallery 2 was for Jeona Zuleta’s 143 Cyber Specie
In my humble opinion: this recent 13 Artist awardee’s works (in general) are polarizing — it’s either you hate/ don’t understand it or you love it so much.
Let’s rephrase — I guess it’s not for everybody – then again, what art is? — I’ll linger on that for a minute.
At first I really didn’t get it because there was so much happening all the time. (plus neon pink is not my cup of tea. nor are vaginas and penises.)
Spending time closely at each piece during the exhibit, I found real gems. Plus, I first saw this show during set up– no black light and live performances.
I really enjoyed the show and now, I can see levels, technique, etc. that I didn’t notice before.
Gallery 3 held Hamilton Sulit’s Walking Through Darkness
This takes hyperrealism to another level. His works are so clean (tried to translate ang linis niya gumawa in Tagalog haha)
The phrase you’re looking for is “damn girl, damn girl” (Justin T, 2007)
In the last room, Gallery 4, Erick Sausa‘s held his show, The Desire for Desires
I really liked his installation. (is that what you call it? I’ve always been not sure. Scuplture? Mixed Media?)
Hoping for the day I could be as brave as Erick to show things beyond the canvas/paper.
This is probably how it will look like:
